The collection is comprised of sixteen audio recordings and unedited transcripts (of six of the interviews) with former Appalachian Volunteer workers who were assigned to West Virginia, between 1964 and 1967, and then settled in the area after their service ended.These interviews were recorded by Marie Tyler McGraw during the summer of 1982 with the support of an Appalachian Studies Fellowship from the Berea College Appalachian Center. The Appalachian Volunteers (AV) was one of the most visible and, initially, successful of the War on Poverty projects of the 1960s. Abstract
Arnold Krochmal was born January 30, 1919, in New York to Morris and Leah Krochmal. The son of immigrant parents, he was raised in the Bronx. He earned a B.S. in Pomology from North Carolina State College in 1942, and served in the Army from 1942 to 1946. After serving in the European theatre during WWII, he went on to earn his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Cornell University.

Abstract
Asher Sizemore (1906-1975) initially worked as a bookkeeper for a mining company in Pike County, Kentucky, but aspired to be a singer. In 1931, singing old-time and cowboy songs, he appeared on radio in Huntington, West Virginia, before moving to WCKY Cincinnati and then WHAS Louisville, where he was first joined on air by his five-year-old son Jimmie (1928- ). In 1933, the duo were hired by the WSM Grand Ole Opry, where they remained a popular act for about 10 years.
